A Peaceful Dwelling

The Last Bus

The next bus arrives in forty minutes, driven by the same driver, who does not seem surprised to see you.

You sign the papers by post. A local firm handles the sale of the cottage. The solicitor writes to say the cat was never found, and then, in a postscript he seems to have hesitated over, that the new owners are very happy in the house, although they say the kettle is sometimes warm.

Some weeks later you notice โ€” idly, the way you notice a missed call โ€” that you cannot clearly remember the last Thursday you lived through. You decide it is a misprint.
