A Peaceful Dwelling

The Records Room

The records room is a cupboard with ambitions. Parish registers, harbor logs, minutes of council meetings apparently transcribed by someone being paid per ounce of ink.

The oldest volume is the town charter, 1743, the year Wrenfell vanished from new maps. Most of it is boundaries and fishing rights. The final clause is different โ€” smaller hand, darker ink:

ITEM: that the town shall render unto the Light one day in seven, freely and in perpetuity, and in exchange the fog shall stand between Wrenfell and every storm, every fleet, every plague, and every tax assessor; and that the day so rendered shall not be named, mourned, nor counted, save by the Keeper, who counts everything.

Beneath it, generations of signatures. The most recent additions are in ballpoint.
